New discoveries in science are enabled by the convergence of technological advances to address significant scientific challenges. Cutting edge research technology and expertise that is non-redundant with existing strengths at Purdue University have been assembled in four Research Core Areas: Biomolecular Technologies (Proteomics, Metabolomics, Genomics, Ionomics), Computational Life Sciences & Informatics, Cytomics & Imaging Technology, and BioNanotechnology. Bindley Bioscience Center has developed a unique model to leverage these Research Cores to support scientific projects in strategic Research Theme Areas: Health & Disease Biomarkers, Diet & Disease Prevention, Drug Discovery & Delivery, and Tissue & Cellular Engineering.
Each Research Theme impacts "real life" problems and includes a broad cross-section of
academic disciplines that can integrate with the Bindley’s new research core technologies. Capitalizing on existing strengths at Purdue University, the work at Bindley Bioscience Center provides a high impact on society through the
generation of new scientific knowledge, the development and commercialization of new technologies, and their translation to promote human
health. The Bindley's infrastructure and expertise further provide unique support for biotechnology development that naturally translates into both spawning new companies and rechraging established companies to enhance economic development in the region and beyond.
“Translational Research and Technology” at Purdue University
Translational research is defined as applied and clinical scientific research that is directed towards testing the validity and limits of
applicability of knowledge derived from basic science and engineering to the understanding of human health and diseases. Translational research could involve living human subjects and/or comparative animal models and include studies of diet, lifestyle and environmental
impacts on human health. The research could involve approaches toward disease treatment or prevention. Equally important is non-clinical
research involving the study of human genes, tissues, specimens or cells that have the capacity to translate knowledge and/or technology
to directly impact health and disease. Translational research could be knowledge that is useful to persons (individuals, families, and populations)
affected by or at risk for specific diseases. Thus, translational research is directed towards generation of knowledge about humans and
includes the “translation” of non-clinical to clinical research.
